This guy whom me and my friends sold our NA Miata to told us the same thing about older Mazdas, sometimes he took MX-3 keys to start other cars.

Correction to that article: Older subaru keys are not interchangeable. The barrels just wear out meaning that overtime it becomes easier to start them with similar keys. This lead to the creation of worn down “jiggle keys” which could be used to start a lot of old subarus.

I have walked up to a car before thinking it was mine and couldn’t figure out why the door was not unlocking. My wife actually got into a car and tried to start it only to realize it was not our car. Full disclosure: we have a blue 2013 Subaru Outback.
